STYLIST TO THE STARS: KEVIN FORTUNE – September 2014

With a celebrity clientele that spans Hollywood A-Listers to British TV, music and radio personalities, star stylist Kevin Fortune is taking tinseltown by storm. In his blog series, we go behind the scenes with Kevin as he coiffs the locks of some familiar faces.

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of prepping, excitement and hard work at the studio for the current series of courses at my Session Styling Academy. I also had the great pleasure of being invited as hair designer and taking a group of graduate stylists to work on a series of catwalk shows by House Of Dernier Cri during London Fashion Week.

HofDC showcased the designs of some incredibly talented up-and-coming UK and international designer talent. So my task was to design a strong catwalk look that wowed the audience, yet also worked well with all of the designers’ individual design aesthetics and wouldn’t take away the emphasis on their distinctly different designs.

The final look, ‘Twist Your Future’, was born out of my initial idea of creating a key look that showcased elegance with a twist. I wanted to play with different textures, yet achieve a sense of cool simplicity. Having used MITCH UK’s Barber’s Classic Pomade on many of my male clients in the past, I adore its high sheen effect, so chose to incorporate it into my design. This achieved a glass-like finish by streamlining the models’ sides with super high gloss impact.

To create an overt contrast in texture, we worked dry shampoo through the roots, working a little lift and a matte finish into the hair. The key design feature was to then work the two separate elements into two twists, with the all-important illusion that there is nothing holding them together – so not a single pin allowed on show! The look was completed by attaching ponytail hair-pieces, slightly fanned out to an unnatural, futuristic bend.

So very proud of my team! One of our current students was adamant she was not confident enough to actually work on the models as we arrived at the venue – and yet she stepped up and did an incredible job throughout the day. To see her bursting with excitement in the midst of her first-ever experience of the backstage catwalk show frenzy was priceless! Stylists confidently tapping into the joy and passion for their work is the greatest reward to receive as their teacher.
