STYLIST TO THE STARS: KEVIN FORTUNE – March 2016

I say the best way to stay connected to my passion and feel great about work is to make sure I take time out every now and again. So after a nine week holiday in South Goa, doing yoga everyday and hanging out with friends, I returned to London refreshed, excited for the new year and ready to work work work!

My first job back in the UK was at Pro Hair Live 2016 in Manchester with Philip Kingsley. It is always a pleasure to work with their incredible team. I had so much fun across two days of live styling sessions, demonstrating PK’s TRICHO PRO Volumizing Protein Spray, which has become an absolute kit essential for me since I was first introduced to the Trichotherapy range.

I love sharing my knowledge and experience of products I trust and believe in, so give me a microphone and a crowd of industry peers and I’m totally in my element. It was a great honour to be invited to this high profile industry event for the second year running and, not surprisingly, it appeared to attract an even greater number of international hairdressers, session stylists and industry professionals. It’s a fantastic buzz to see everyone showcase, and experience the full spectrum of all the very latest industry trends and products.

As a hairdresser and stylist, I think it is very important to build strong relationships with brands you feel passionate about. This is also one of the reasons we have invited Lisa Caddy, International Education Manager and consulting trichologist, back to the Academy on our spring and summer courses to share her wealth of knowledge with stylists enrolled on our courses. Understanding the essentials of the science of hair and how key products work to promote and maintain healthy hair is equally important in my work as making people look amazing. This is why I adore collaborating with Philip Kingsley; it lies at the heart of their brand-ethic and extensive product range.

As a session stylist, a highlight is always to receive a phone call from a production company, or agent, you have worked with in the past, and get booked to work an artist for the very first time. I could barely contain my excitement when I was asked to work with Hollywood legend, the incomparable Glenn Close for her appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show. She loved having her short and edgy hair styled with lots of texture and movement and I think she just looked so effortlessly stylish. I look forward to working with her again while she’s in London. What a cool lady and an absolute dream to work with. There is nothing quite like getting to work with an artist I have grown up watching on screen, being in awe of their talent and artistry, to finding yourself chatting and laughing with her behind the scenes and knowing I have played a small part in making her look and feel amazing as talks about her iconic career.

From the ITV studios to London’s club-scene – I was booked as hair designer to create looks for performers and hosts at Ministry of Sound’s new night, The Ting Tong Club. After one week of playing with ideas and designing looks with my fabulous team of eight stylists, we killed it on the night, styling outrageous wigs, extensions and hairpieces that were as bonkers as the characters the promoters had created. After my house being adapted into a studio for the past week, with assistants popping in and out to help colour, cut and style my creations, it’s nice to pack up my ever-expanding collection of hair extensions and wigs…ready to play again on our next Academy course in a few weeks’ time when it will be the stylists on the course who will get the opportunity to let their imagination roam free.
